Rangehood noise - Troubleshooting

Solution

A noisy rangehood installation can often be attributed to ducting issues. Using the wrong type or size of ducting or having too many bends or a duct that's too long, can increase noise and performance. It's best to use rigid, smooth ducting (like galvanized steel) rather than flexible ducting, and to ensure the duct diameter is appropriate for the rangehood model. Semi rigid ducts can also be used if unable to use rigid duct. Fully flexible duct is not recommended by Electrolux.

Possible Causes

1. Duct Material and Size:

Avoid Flexible Ducting:

Flexible ducting, while convenient, has a rough, uneven surface that creates turbulence and back pressure, leading to increased noise.

Use Smooth Ducting:

Opt for rigid, smooth ducting (like galvanized steel) to minimize airflow resistance and noise however if unable to use rigid, semi rigid duct can be used.

Proper Diameter:

Ensure the duct diameter matches the rangehood's outlet and doesn't get reduced anywhere in the duct run. Manufacturers usually specify the recommended diameter, often 125mm or 150mm.

Length and Bends:

Keep the duct length as short as possible and minimize bends, as each bend adds resistance and noise.

External Motor:

Consider an external motor (if possible) located outside the house, which can significantly reduce noise in the kitchen.

2. Installation Practices:

Follow Manufacturer's Instructions:

Carefully follow the installation instructions provided with your rangehood, especially regarding ducting size, length, and routing.

Seal Gaps:

Ensure all connections and joints are properly sealed to prevent air leaks and noise.

Professional Installation:

We recommend all rangehoods to be installed by professional ventilation installers.

Troubleshoot Noise

To check if rangehood noise is coming from the ducting or the rangehood itself, disconnect the duct from the rangehood and operate the hood without it.
